Late 2009 Flysurfer teamrider Gunnar Biniasch, Flyboards shaper and Flysurfer rider Eddy Lansink travelled to Brazil with a vision in mind, to create a video about flying and riding their own style in kiteboarding, during this project Toby Brauer, the founder of kiteforum.com joined them in their quest to create an old-school kiteboarding movie which will be remembered.

The condition's were perfect for the Flysurfer Speed3 12m. With wind reaching up to 18-19 knots Jelmer van der Kist is going for some big floaty airs and is training for his new trick, the backward 720 board off.

Ozone Zephyr 17m 2010 Kite Review

The Ozone Zephyr 17m Lightwind Kitesurfing Kite 2010

The Ozone Zephyr is a light wind and race specific kite from Ozone Kiteboarding. The kite is new for the 2010 season and our demo rocked up a couple of weeks ago.

From getting this kite out of the bag you see the quality Ozone pride themselves with. The kite comes in an Ozone branded stuff sack which is inside a decent lightweight rucksack with compression straps. In the bag you will also find a repair pack, stickers, instructions a safety leash and bar pocket to stop the kite getting wet and sandy after a session.

Besides the fact the kite is 17m it is fast and easy to set up, There is no options on the lines so its a case of larks heading the lines onto the kite. All adjustment for back line tension and trimming is done on the bar. This feature also means you can adjust the back line tension on the fly out on the water or if your passing the kite around to different riders.

On the first day of flying the kite it was being used on the landboard in light winds. The kite has a firm bar pressure which builds as the wind picks up, Once the kite is flying it generates power quite quickly through apparent wind which helps it in the lower end of its wind range. The kite remains stable at all times where ever you put it in the window.

Relaunching the kite varies a lot between wind speeds, the more wind the easier. Relaunch is not instant like some of the newer kites on the market but this is mainly due to the size. When the kite is leading edge down on the water pulling one of the outside steering lines will slide the kite to the edge of the window, maintaining tension on the line the kite will eventually flip around and re-launch.

Ozone state the windrange as 6-20knts for this kite, at 11 1/2 stone and on a 128cm/38cm board I was staying upwind in around 10knts, I would not take this kite out in lower than 8-9knts, even with a door as the kite is still relatively heavy in the sky. I was also flying a Flysurfer Speed 3 15m Deluxe back to back on the same day which has a few knts lower end than the Zephyr, The speed however is £575 more complete!

This kite really seems to come to life in around 15knts, in these conditions the kite will easily park and ride, the turning speed becomes faster, more direct and the kite is overall more of a pleasure to fly. The kite turns faster than expected for a 17m and is still usable for popping over waves and carving with a downloop. Impressively the kite will also downloop out of jumps high up in the window without a massive amount of downwind pull whilst in the air. The kite does not generate a huge amount of pop so jumps will never be ground breakingly high off flat water but there is plenty of float for pulling off some old school moves or rotations.

During one session I took the kite out in around 20knts, Other other kiters heavier than myself where flying 9.5m and 11.5m Best Kahoonas, a 12m Vegas 09 and an 08 9m Fuel. Even in this wind speed the kite remains solid and manageable in wavey conditions, The kite rockets upwind and you can literally glide off the wave faces. The kites speed through the window really accelerates in higher winds yet edging hard upwind against the power with the kite low kills off a lot of the power smoothly and quickly.

In lower winds the kite also unhooks well off the bar without any adjustment (depending on how it is set up) because it is such a power house it is great fun for popping raileys and other low kite tricks from without any chance of accidentally moving it or redirecting it by mistake, common error whilst unhooking on 7's and 9's!

Overall Ozone have manufactured a very solid and stable contender for light-moderate winds or heavier riders and managed to keep the price compareable to other kites on the market. It doesnt have quite the same amount of low end or hangtime as some of the larger depower foils on the market but this can be justafied with the price differences. It is safe to say we are keeping our Zephyr on Demo so give us a shout to see where we are riding next!

The Navigator Bar: questions and answers

What were the main objectives for the design of the Navigator?

One of the main objectives was to design an easy and comfortable to use bar with safety system that meets the latest standards. The complete bar should be clean and without much explanation a rider should intuitively know how to use it. It should be made for a large range of riders from waveriding to freestyle.

Apart from this, it has always been implied in Peter Lynn’s design philosophy to make a product which lasts and can be kept in a good condition without too much hassle and at little cost. The Navigator incorporates materials of a very high quality with long lasting construction methods. Any parts that may wear out in the long term can easily be replaced.

How does the safety system work?
The black center top line runs up to about 10m and then splits into two lines. The red safety line running through the depower loop and bar is also attached to one flying line at this V-split. When activating the safety release on the depower loop or when unhooking your depower loop and letting go of your bar, the bar slides forward on the red line. The red line is attached to only one of the top lines and the kite will lose its shape.

Does the swivel spin automatically?
Why has a swivel below the bar been preferred to one above the bar like many other brands do?
The swivel needs to be operated by hand, it spins easily when riding. In our opinion swivels above the bar function pretty well, but they do not spin a 100% every time you want it.
As the swivel is easy to reach, you can easily spin it by hand while cruising. Please note you do not need to spin the swivel after every rotation, you can just do it once in a while to keep your lines free from twists.
Because the safety line is running through the center of the swivel, your leash does not wrap around your depower loop when untwisting your lines.

PL has used an adjusting strap for many years. Now you have changed to a cleat system, why?
We believe both an adjusting strap and cleat work very well. The reason we have chosen a cleat system on the Navigator is that with the longer throw setup, the adjuster is easy to reach and besides one intuitively knows how to use it. After experimenting extensively with various types of pulling chord and handles on the straps, we believe the cleat system worked better, as there are no dangling bits and pieces. One problem with many cleat systems is that it is difficult and expensive to replace the line running through the cleat. In the long term the line may wear and it might not grip the cleat that well anymore. On the Navigator we have addressed this problem by making it very easy to replace the line and cleat if needed.

How does the stopper work?
The stopper slides up and down the line very easy. By grabbing the upper part to move it up and the lower part to move it down, the stopper can be moved with very little effort. When the bar is pushed against the lower part it jams the line between the two parts and locks itself.
The upper part can be turned around if one wishes to make the stopper function either as a full locking stopper or as a push-through stopper.

In what sizes does the Navigator come, for which size Charger kite?
The Navigator comes in three packages: small, medium and large. The package is a combination of a certain bar size with a certain length of the flying lines.
The Navigator small package contains a 45-55cm bar with 20m lines and 3m extensions
The Navigator medium package contains a 45-55cm bar with 23m lines and 3m extensions
The Navigator large package contains a 45-55cm bar with 23m lines and 3m extensions

The medium bar is the most allround setup, supplied as a standard bar with the Charger 10, 12 and 15.
This allround bar setup can be used with any size Charger kite and is the perfect bar to get if you want just one bar. By varying the bar size by changing the attachments on the endcaps and by using the extension set, you can adjust your bar to fly better on a smaller or larger kite.
If you prefer the best setup for the Charger 8, the Navigator small is recommended. If you want to get the most out of the Charger 19, the Navigator large is recommended.

Great news , It looks like GoPro are releasing a full 1080p version of the extremely popular helmet and surf hero cameras. Not only can you now shoot in 1920x1080 but the cameras will host a rechargeable battery, with the bonus of being able to charge from a USB point.

New From Ozone: There’s a lot of interest in our C shape and more will be revealed soon. Robbie has managed to create a 4 line C kite that has full depower and a very easy relaunch, the same as all modern kites.
How has he done this you may ask? God knows...but the C4 is explosive, turns on a dime yet has the ease of use that any modern LEI has yet with the positive attributes of the C shape but without any of the negatives a C shape brings.

BKSA Blackpool

August bank holiday weekend brought BKSA round 4 to Blackpool. ATB Shop team rider Greg Chilton has taken part in the 2009 kite landboarding tour. Saturday saw the mens freestyle in some pretty extreme conditions, 25-30mph in very sketchy sand. The final saw Lewis Wilby, Ned Tylor and Mark Berry battle it out for 1st place.

Juniors Final result:
1st Ted Pokly
2nd Greg Chilton
3rd Sam Lawman

Unfortunately the juniors got delayed until the Sunday due to the extreme conditions and the tide taking the beach. Sunday saw a dramatic drop in wind and poorer sand conditions. Greg was drawn for heat 1 against Sam Lawman. The heat saw two very different riding styles, Sam with technical boardoffs and ATB Rider Greg pulling some super powered tricks.
Sam Lawman won the heat against Greg putting him through to the 3 man final.
Heat 2 saw Ted Pokly and James Langton fight for a place in the 3 man final. Ted won due to James having to withdraw from the comp due to an injury. This put Greg automatically into the 3man final.
By this time the sand and wind conditions hand worsen, gusty wind and shredded sand. It was a close final with all riders pushing themselves to the limit.

well done Greg! Greg will be attending the final round of BKSA at Redcar at the end of October.

Posting from Lake Como, Colico - Italy. Myself (Marcus) and Tom Beaton from Maxtrack are present for the release and testing of the all new Flysurfer Speed 3 kite. We have so far had a chance to ride the new kites in both serial and deluxe, Also we have had a chance to ride prototype 2010 Flyboards, including a new mutant wave board!

September Demo Weekend!

Following the success of our last demo weekend / general kiting malarkey and chilling on the beach we are holding another demo weekend.

We are planning to head down to Head for Llangennith - SA3 1JD this weekend. Staying at Hillend Campsite right on the beach. As the last one was so busy we are holding this one after the kids go back to school so hopefully we will all get into the same campsite.

We aim to hit the campsite Friday night after shop closure and camping until late Sunday.

Just bring yourself, Some kit, Something to sleep in, beer for the evening and water for the day!

We have lots of demo kit, land and water from small 2 line foils to large kitesurfing kites and boards.

If you are after something specific from one of the Brands we support give us a shout before the weekend and we will do our best to sort it for you!

Kitesurfing at Hayling Island

On the 16th of August Marcus from ATBshop and local kitesurfer Jay headed down to Hayling Island for what looked like a very low wind session. Luckily the wind picked up in the afternoon and we had 15knts and miles of flat water to play with! We finally managed to get out and test the Jn Chit-Chat which was an awesome board for flat water and popping unhooked! We met up with some more locals down there and had a pretty awesome session with bly sky and super warm waters - topped off with a pub dinner on the way home.

Greg Chilton Joined the ATBShop kite team late last year. Greg impressed us and showed great promises in becoming a new up and coming kite boarder.

He's out every weekend he can with his kit and is already getting a name for himself in the kitting community. Already in such a short time this year Greg has come 2nd in the BSKA junior category held at Swansea and recently came 3rd in the adult category in Barrow.

Yes you read correctly 3rd in the Adult Category!

There wasn't enough riders to make a junior category so Greg asked if he could move up into the adult category. To his delight they said he could and so Greg did his best to wow the judges. There was tough competition but the judges were so impressed that they award him 3rd place!

Greg was really pleased with his position and was later heard saying "Bring on Blackpool" We wish him the best of luck and are right behind him for the rest of the season!

Best Nemesis NXG 2010

On Monday 10th Frazer from Best Kiteboarding came to show off the new 2010 range of kites and the Balance kitesurfing boards. The range this year consists of the already released Best Kahoona, Best Guroo, Best Waroo and Best Nemesis NXG. There have been some big changes to the range this year with the Waroo seeing the biggest advancements. It will be released as a higher performing kite to the previous Waroo, featuring twister tech, a new bridle system, some awesome new graphics and swept tips inspired from the Kahoona. The Nemesis NXG is the pure freestyler and wakestyle kite of choice in the range. We are expecting to receive our demo NXG at the end of August and will be going out to Ireland at the beginning of September to test the new range fully!

Llangennith Demo Weekend

Last weekend the ATBShop team headed to Wales to hold a demo weekend in the Gower!

There wasn’t much wind forecast for the weekend sadly but we were as ever very optimistic. We’d already had txt messages from people to say they’d started the weekend early and headed down on Friday and were having a great session!

Marcus and Stu were both green with envy, itching to get out there onto the beach. The whole of Friday was spent on Wind guru and Xc checking the forecast in between serving customers in store and on line.

Armed with the ATBShop team van bursting full of kit, Marcus and Diana headed out on road Friday evening. We had packed every piece of kiting equipment we had and had been loaned extra Kahoonas to try from Best as well as a rather nice sun tent/base camp. On our way up to the Gower we received a call saying the nearest campsite to the beach was full and the next campsite was getting that way!

The weather forecast was sunny so every Welshman and his wife wanted to go to the beach, which was bad for us as we didn’t think we’d get a space!

Luckily we did find a “campsite” (field and portaloo) that night and were up by 7am the following morning after a chilled evening drinking and chatting with other fellow kiters we’d just met!

The following morning we headed down to the beach where we made a quick brew, mushroom and egg bap and then we hit the beach bright and early!

We were so excited we took everything down to the beach and inflated all of the Lei’s. We then kept checking the wind and every time there was a bit we grabbed a kite!

Saturday went to the Flysurfer Speed 2 Silver Arrow. The lack of wind put the Flysurfer to the test but none of us were disappointed as it flew so efficiently in low winds. Unfortunately there was only the one so we took it in turns, waiting on the shore line for the next person to jump on. Coupled with the Flyboards Medium Door (155x42.5) just a breath of air was enough, kite surfing was possible in just under 10mph and we were stonking upwind in 12 even through small swell!

It has to be said the combination of the Flydoor and Silver Arrow made our weekend! We are now even more excited about the launch of the Speed 3 and plan to have one on the demo fleet asap! Silver Arrow = low wind insurance policy.

Although all the local campsites were completely full the whole weekend there was still plenty of space on the beach and in the water. We got back late to the campsite after having to drag some people off the beach. Some people who’d come down to the demo hadn’t booked a campsite so we took it in turns having to blag each person into the fully booked site with the farmer.

Luckily the farmer took pity on us and let a few of us stay after he’d turned so many away previously. After a late tea/food out of cans we had a nice evening chilling and chatting so we were refreshed for a full day down the beach.

A little later start saw us on the beach by 9am. Again all the kit but this time the first thing out the bag was the wind meter. A very disappointing start to Sunday morning saw a few desperately trying to see which kite would work in the least amount of wind. Again the Flysurfer's performance was miles ahead of anything.

As Sunday progressed more kiters took to the beach and gave various kites and boards ago. Finally the wind picked up late on Sunday afternoon. All the determined kite flyers who stayed around to get the last bit of wind and sun in were rewarded with a really good hour session.

Everyone had a kite and board of some description in hand. Smiles could be seen by all from a far. Everyone had been waiting all weekend for this hour and what an hour it was!

The Best Kahoona 11.5m really came into its own with people blasting up and down the beach. Beginners found the kite easy to fly and the more experienced kiters found the Kahoona an awesome grunt machine to boost under.

As for the 19m Speed, that just got more fun! We really had problems getting everyone to share the kite as we only had one! Marcus can’t wait to test the new Flysurfer Speed 3 and 2010 Flyboards later this month in Italy! – It’s a though job but someone has to do it!

Marcus ended his weekend with a bit of dune jumping. As you can see from the photos even the pro’s get it wrong some times! A bit of a sandy Marcus came back. Surely yet another excuses to get back into the water to rinse off? (he thought so)

Before leaving we rounded off the weekend with Cheese and biscuits and a mug of tea back at the van as we chatted about how good the whole weekend had been. The sun was fantastic and was so hot! We just needed a bit more wind at it would have been the best weekend of the year!

Everyone came back from the beach feeling beaten! That last hour used a weekends worth of energy as people blasted up and down the beach. It was true to say all of us were considering throwing a sicky on Monday if we could stay an extra night! But sadly someone had to open the shop and we had Best booked in to see the new Waroo 2010 and Nemesis NXG.
